Massimiliano Viel is a composer, musician, and researcher based in Milano, Italy. With a career spanning over three decades, he has produced more than fifty works for both acoustic and electronic instruments, ranging from solo pieces to full orchestral compositions. His works have been showcased in over 20 countries worldwide.
His artistic journey is also marked by an innovative exploration of the relationship between music and other media. He has created performances and installations that integrate music with theatre, visual arts, and dance, establishing a dynamic and interdisciplinary approach to his art.
He has collaborated extensively as a composer, keyboard player, and sound designer with various ensembles, orchestras, such as Caput Ensemble of Rejkiavik, MusikFabrik of Düsseldorf, the Teatro Alla Scala Orchestra of Milan, the Symphonic Orchestra of the WDR, the Orchestra of Paris and many others. He has worked alongside renowned composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, and Fausto Romitelli, contributing to concerts, performances, and tours across Europe and beyond.
In addition to his creative pursuits, he has authored books and papers in the fields of music theory, sound studies, and music education. His most recent book, “Listening Patterns”, recently translated in Italia as “Ascoltare. Tra musica, cognizione e percezione” ; it offers an in-depth analysis of the listening experience, focusing on the interplay of memory and expectation.
Viel holds a PhD from the Planetary Collegium at the University of Plymouth, UK and is full professor at the Conservatory of Milano, Italy.
